(Jmovie) Let’s Go Karaoke (2023)
Original title: Karaoke Iko (カラオケ行こ!)
Synopsis:
Kyoji Narita (Go Ayano) is a high ranking yakuza member. On a rainy day, he wanders on the street. He hears a singing sound and he walks towards the sound. There, he meets junior high school student Satomi Oka (Jun Saito) and he invites him to go to a karaoke place to teach him to sing. Kyoji Narita badly wants to improve his singing so he won't place last in his gang's karaoke competition. Meanwhile, Satomi Oka is a 3rd grade junior high school students and leads the school choral club. Satomi Oka has a sincere personality, but he often makes biting remarks. He has one problem, which is that he has difficulties with high-pitched notes due to his voice going through puberty. Satomi Oka is embarrassed by the unexpected request from Kyoji Narita.
I was enthusiastic to watch the movie as soon the trailer
was out. The collaboration between a yakuza and a middle school student is kind
of unique, especially dealing with singing. I didn' read the original work, that is, the manga with the same title by Yama Wayama. It's published in August 25, 2019 by Kadokawa.
And my enthusiasm didn’t go to waste as soon as the movie
was out. I’m glad I watch it and happy to see the bittersweet in it.
As expected from a senior actor like Go Ayano, he performed flawless
as a yakuza. At first, I thought he was suck in singing, as seen in the
trailer, but in the movie, his voice was just out of pitch in some notes. Therefore,
he was right to ask some suggestions from a choir member who is good at
soprano. Jun Saito, as the yakuza mentor in singing, performed quite well with a
bit of expressionless face.
The movie did not only focus on the
yakuza-practicing-singing, but also the turmoil of a teenager whose voice was
about to change. As a captain in his choir group, Satomi was expected to be a
role model for his friends, but Wada, his ambitious kohai, expected more of
Satomi.
The friendship between these two didn’t go smoothly as
first. Well, who would want to make friends with a yakuza? But the approach was
hilarious. I giggled a lot in the beginning. The ending has a light plot twist
that left bittersweet.
How long will their friends last? Just watch the movie
yourself. I won’t give away the spoiler. I guarantee it’s really worth your
time.
PS: I thought I won't see Satomi sing, but the song at the end kept echoing in my ears. I looked for the song in Youtube music, the title is Kurenai (meaning crimson) by X Japan. The song was released in 1989. Wow, the song is even older than Jun Saito :D
