(Jmovie) Phases of The Moon (2022)

Original title: Tsuki no Michikake (月の満ち欠け) by Sato Shogo

 The Plot

Osanai Kei enjoys a peaceful and happy life with his wife, Osanai Kozue, and daughter, Osanai Ruri, but his wife and daughter die in an accident. Osanai Kei's life suddenly changes. One day, a man named Misumi Akihiko visits Osanai Kei. Misumi Akihiko tells him that on the day Osanai Kozue and Osanai Ruri died, Osanai Ruri, who was a complete stranger to him, was coming to see him. Misumi Akihiko tells him about a woman named Masaki Ruri, who he once loved. These people, who don't seem related, connect under the name of love.
Reading the synopsis caused me a bit confusion. There are two Ruri with different family names in a film seemed confusing to me. How are they related to each other?

This review contains spoiler, I'm warning you 😁

About a half of the film, I was still mixed up with the timeline of the story. The first Ruri (in the movie timeline), 7 year-old, suddenly visited a movie rental looking for Anna Karenina movie. When she was picked up by her father, she said something that seemed impossible to be uttered by a 7 year old girl. Was she possessed or something?

Then the timeline was backward to 1980, the year when John Lennon died. (the background music all from John Lennon, e.g, Woman) It was the year when Ruri's parents (Mr and Mrs. Osanai) got married. It was almost the same year when adult Ruri met someone from the movie rental, and fell in love. A year later, Osanai got a child, called Ruri. I assumed that the day when adult Ruri got an accident and died.

Is my synopsis version a bit clearer to you? No, more confused? 😃😃😃

I started to get the hang of the movie after Ruri's best friend, Yui, met Mr. Osanai. She explained things from what she remembered when they were in high school. Osanai Ruri was fond of painting, and one of the paintings was a picture of Misumi Akihiko, the one who used to be the staff of video rental in 1980s. Theoretically,  she never encountered him in her life. How could she paint his face? Apparently,  Osanai Ruri had a memory of adult Ruri who died in 1981.

A happy family with teen Ruri

Do you believe in reincarnation? It seemed that what happened. No matter how much Mr. Osanai denied, he couldn't resist the truth that these two Ruri, somehow, connected to each other.

I watched this movie aside from being curious of the synopsis, and might be for Meguro Ren. As I said earlier that I didn't really get what was happening in the movie for a half of the movie, and it's slow paced, I got a bit sleepy 😃 The timeline was backward and forward along from the story teller. At times, it was told from Yui's point of view, then changed into Akihiko's past when he was together with adult Ruri.

The adult Ruri

Overall, I enjoy the movie, it's a bit tear-jerking, and I was quite satisfied with the ending, even though I wanted to see the child Ruri to see the man in her memory in a flesh, but it was presented in different way. The casts did a very good job, especially from Yo Oizumi, such a versatile actor.

Casts:

Aizumi Yo as Osanai Kei

Arimura Kasumi as Masaki Ruri

Meguro Ren as Misumi Akihiko

Shibasaki Ko as Osanai Kozue

Tanaka Kei as Masaki Ryunosuke

Ito Sairi as Midorisaka Yui

The trailer

My rating:

Story: 8/10

Casts/ Acting: 9/10

Music: 9/10

Re-watch value: 7/10
