(Jmovie) BL Metamorphosis
A story about the friendship between a 17-year-old high school girl and a 75-year-old lady who met through BL manga.
How do you connect with other people? In my case, it's through books. Other hobbies might work, too, but books for me is more long lasting than any other things. I can talk about books for hours, not to mention giving someone book recommendation. That's why, I feel like I get connected with this movie. It's been quite long I've been waiting for this movie to get subbed.
It truly touched me to see such a heartwarming friendship between individuals with such a significant age difference. Sayama Urara was 17 year-old high school student and Ichinoi Yuki was 75 year-old calligraphy teacher. They met each other through BL manga. I can feel how Urara felt that she didn't want anybody in her class to know that she's a fujoshi. Not to mention that she was a kind of unpopular girl in her class. She concealed her deep passion for BL manga within her heart. She even took special care to keep her BL manga collection apart from her other regular manga. As for me, I kept my progress in reading BL manga for myself. I don't want to publish publicly since deep in my heart, I can feel the way Urara felt.
As for Yuki san, in her senior age, living by herself, to find a new genre of manga was kind of fresh breeze. She never knew that BL manga genre exist. At first, she read it solely out of curiosity and for the captivating illustrations it contained. She never thought she could get captivated by the romance between the two male leads. From one volume, she craved for more. When she found that the volume was released within more than a year, she calculated how many years she could finish the whole volume. Looking at how she blushed, giddy, and cheered on the two leads reminds me of myself. Whenever I indulge in BL manga or drama, I find myself doing the same thing. Do I get someone to share my interest? I envy Yuki san for having Urara to share their thought. So far, I only read people's opinions or discussion in some social media or mydramalist.
When I watched the movie, I got worried if something would happen to Yuki san regarding her old age and poor health condition. It is typical for Japanese dramas to build up heartwarming moments, only to deliver a heartbreaking ending. But, spoiler alert, this movie doesn't follow that typical pattern. The gradual development of the relationship between the two main leads, from their initial awkwardness to a close bond, is something I truly enjoy. Urara developed some characters changes after having an encounter with Yuki san. Similar to Urara, Yuki san found a life spirit within her only to get monthly magazines to update the ongoing mangas she followed.
Overall, I highly recommend this movie to everyone who wants to see touching heartwarming movie. You can smile as well as cry at the same time. My heart melted when Yuki san finally met her favorite author and showed her gratitude to her that through her manga, she encountered an unexpected friendship with Urara. Imagining to have a friend with more than 50 years apart is like a miracle. As for Urara, to find someone who shared her hidden desire of BL manga was like a miracle, too. Her being dumbfounded when meeting her favorite author was explicitly shown. I might be at the same state if I were Urara. As for her skipping the comiket, leaving her stand empty was a bit disappointing. However, to see other participants with high spirit and confidence, who could be Urara in the midst of that scene. Somehow, it reminds me of Kabe Koji drama that showed quite a lot of similar scenes. This movie also tells about whether we can be true to ourselves regarding our aspiration.
