The Plot
Amano Yashiro has a crush on his best friend, Nanahara Kenta. Yashiro died in a car accident after being rejected by Kenta. However, due to God's favoritism, Yashiro was reborn as a female student called Tendo Kagura, and lives a new life. Yashiro decides to make use of his girly look to have Kenta fall for him. While Yashiro and Kenta become closer, they were interrupted by Kenta's ex-girlfriend, Torii Rin, who told "Kagura" to stay away from Kenta. Furthermore, it was discovered that Yashiro's body is still alive. What is actually happening?
This drama was based on a manga with the same title by Komura Ayumi. It was published in March 18, 2017 - May, 2, 2018 with 5 volumes. Well, I didn't read the manga. I just knew that it was based on a manga when I'm writing this post :D
I've been watching quite lot of BL dramas, but this drama feels different for me. Not to mention a gender bender theme. I thought I watched this kind of theme twice, Kimi no Nawa (Your Name) - an anime, and Switched, a 6-episode drama released in 2018.
Well, I want to know whether you believe in reincarnation. If you do, would you be born to be the same as you are now, or be someone else?
Identity crisis happened to anyone in some stages of life, especially teenagers. Not to mention some complications like bullying, romance, family matters, etc. There are so many reasons why people want to be reborn as someone else. I don't blame Yashiro for having the wish, since he feel for his childhood friend who has the same gender as he. Meanwhile for Kagura, well, the drama didn't really focus on her while she was on her previous form. She just stated that she was different from others that she was considered as weird. Being different is not always a bless, but it can be being cast away by society--her classmates.
Both of them, Kagura and Yashiro' wishes were granted by Kamisama, reborn as someone else. Happy? Of course! Yashiro's figure was turned into a pretty girl that he could flirt with Kenta, his crush. Kagura, beside getting a new form, she moved to a new school that she could start everything over. Together with Kenta, and Rin, Kenta's ex girlfriend, they looked like normal happy high students. Problems started to come when Kagura saw her old friend who couldn't recognize her as the old Kagura (since now she was in Yashiro's body). Not to mention, they also switched their family.
After they became restless with their new form, would Kamisama grant their wish to return to their old form? Kamisama had some rules to obey, too, you know.
The characters who now fell for one another: Yashiro (in Kagura's body) held his crush to Kenta, Rin fell for Kagura for who she was, and Kenta started to ask himself if he were into Yashiro in different from friendship relationship. in half of the drama, the characters kept asking themselves "In any shape of form, I will always love you", "Can we still love the same person regardless of appearance," and "Can we only love the person because their body and soul alone?".
In other words, Would Kenta fall for Yashiro even though he was in Kagura's body because his heart and soul were Yashiro's? Would Rin still fall for Kagura if she were in her original body? It's quite intriguing to have such questions.
The casts did amazing job to portray their characters. Sakurada Hiyori performed perfect Yashiro's girl form. the way she sat, talked (she even used 'ore' instead of watashi) and walked. Taiyou Fujiwara played Kagura's boy figure perfectly. He was brighter than Yashiro in his previous form. (I didn't find he used 'watashi' instead of 'ore'). Kubozuka Airu did Kenta's role well. He showed his complications when he found himself might get attracted to Yashiro, too, no matter what his form was. And so was Arai Myra whose role was Rin. At first, it seemed that she didn't want to lose from Kagura in getting Kenta back. But I was wrong. Instead, she was attracted to Kagura/ Yashiro. Even she saw her friend's complications, she supported them. And she was the one who ended up dejected. Yuki Furukawa had the role as The Almighty Kamisama who played favorite over the four. As Kamisama, he had his past, too, who wasn't far cry from Kenta-Yashiro.
Last but not least, I did enjoy watching the drama. The script was well written, and the casts did perfect job. Bravo!
